Cheryl Maloney was born and raised in the Indian brook reservation (Sipekne’katik), Sipekne’katik district of the Mi’kmaq nation. Cheryl is the daughter of the late Gloria Maloney, and Indian residential school survivor and the late Sagamow Reg Maloney, Long time Chief and treaty advocate, Cheryle is also a mother and grandmother.
Cheryl has a unique and diverse background contributing to a wealth of experience in the political and legal indigenous community. She has participated with “on the ground” grass roots initiatives involving indigenous, human and environmental rights.
Cheryl represented her nation at the international level on climate change, mobility rights, food security and species at risk. You can find some of them in her art.
Cheryl is also a co-producer and lead researcher on documentary films. The game of hockey; A Mi’kmaq story. The film provides a surprising narrative that takes the readers well beyond Christopher Columbus to some of Nova Scotia’s earliest visitors, including the Knights Templars.
Cheryl brings a wide array of knowledge and life experience into her art. She is a self-taught multimedia artist and considers her paintings “A piece of history, art, story telling and spirituality’
