Kokom Scrunchies was founded in 2019 by Mya Beaudry, an Algonquin youth from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, as a fundraiser for her community's youth.Using a Kokom (Algonquin for grandmother) scarf, she learned to sew from YouTube tutorials and began making scrunchies with her mother to sell at a local powwow.The business quickly grew, named for the inspired "grandmother" scarves and expanding to include other products while celebrating Indigenous role models through its designs and story.
