Welcome to Treaty Truckhouse: Indigenous Art, Gifts and More

Welcome to the Treaty Truckhouse blog, a new place for us to share more about our store, community and the people behind the products and the work happening throughout the year.

Treaty Truckhouse is a Sipekne’katik First Nation retail initiative located on the Halifax waterfront. Our store brings together Indigenous art, jewellery, beadwork, quillwork, apparel, books, gifts, wellness products and other carefully selected items.

All products available at Treaty Truckhouse are created by Indigenous artists and makers or supplied by Indigenous-owned businesses. Each piece reflects the individual artist’s skills, ideas, and creative practice. We believe it is important to recognize the people behind the work and help customers understand who made the items they are purchasing whenever that information is available.

More Than a Place to Shop

Treaty Truckhouse was created as more than a retail space. It provides an opportunity to showcase Indigenous creativity, create stronger connections between artists and customers, and contribute to community economic development.

For visitors to Halifax, the store offers an opportunity to learn more about Sipekne’katik First Nation and to purchase meaningful products from Indigenous artists and businesses. For local customers, it is a place to discover new work, find gifts and continue supporting Indigenous makers throughout the year.

Every product has its own story. Sometimes that story is connected to the artist, the materials they use or the process required to create the piece. Other times, it is about how the product will be used, gifted or carried forward by the person who purchases it.

This blog will give us more room to share those stories.

What You Can Expect

Over the coming months, we plan to feature:

  • Indigenous artists and makers represented in the store
  • Traditional and contemporary art forms
  • Information about materials such as beads, porcupine quills and sweetgrass
  • New products and seasonal collections
  • Gift guides and product-care advice
  • Store events and community purchasing opportunities
  • Updates from Treaty Truckhouse

We also hope the blog will help customers make informed purchases and develop a greater appreciation for the time, knowledge and creativity involved in the work they see in our store.
